Jensen Interceptor SP vs 7.2 Mk III: how to identify a genuine SP

A 7.2-litre Jensen Interceptor Mk III is not automatically a Jensen SP. Both can use Chrysler's 440-cubic-inch V8, and after more than fifty years both can also wear parts that did not leave West Bromwich with the car.
That makes the usual visual shorthand — three carburettors, a heavily louvred bonnet or SP badges — useful, but not decisive. If the value of a car depends on it being a genuine SP, start with the chassis identity and factory record. Use the engine and visible specification to corroborate that history, not to replace it.
What was the Jensen SP?
Jensen introduced the SP in 1971 as a separate high-performance flagship alongside the Interceptor III. Period Jensen sales material distinguished the two clearly: the contemporary Interceptor III used the 6.2-litre Chrysler V8, while the SP received the 7.2-litre 440 with the three two-barrel carburettors that gave the model its Six-Pack name.
The confusion came later. Standard Mk III Interceptors also moved to the 440, but with a more conventional single four-barrel carburettor arrangement. From that point, engine capacity alone could no longer tell you whether the chassis was an SP.
The Jensen Museum lists the SP separately from the Interceptor Mk III and records 232 cars built between 1971 and 1973. That rarity makes correct identification important, but a production total is not an authentication method.
The chassis number is the best place to start
Jensen did not simply identify the SP by fitting a Six-Pack to an otherwise anonymous Interceptor. The model had its own factory schedules.
The Jensen Museum's development history records 131 for early right-hand-drive SPs and 132 for early left-hand-drive SPs. It says the later schedules became 138 for right-hand-drive cars and 134 for left-hand-drive cars after revisions around the end of 1972. The Museum's own documented cars support the pattern: the first production SP is 131/4254, while the 1972 Geneva Motor Show car is 132/5577.
A reproduced Jensen Interceptor III & SP parts-catalogue identification table provides an equally important piece of context: early standard Mk III prefixes such as 128, 129 and 133 are listed with both 383 G-series and 440 H-series engines. Later standard 440 cars use further non-SP schedules including 136, 137 and 140.
In other words, a factory 440 can sit in a standard Interceptor chassis schedule. The presence of a 440 is not proof of SP identity.
The online parts table is a reproduction rather than an original catalogue inspected here, so treat it as technical supporting evidence rather than the sole authority on a valuable car. A chassis-linked factory record remains stronger.
If the SP was not a US-market model, what does chassis prefix 134 mean?
This is a useful example of why a chassis code and a delivery market are related but not identical facts.
The reproduced parts-catalogue table labels 134 as an LHD/USA SP. Read in isolation, that sounds as though 134 identifies a normal run of American-market SPs. The surviving history is more unusual.
The Jensen Museum says only 13 left-hand-drive SPs were built, in part because the Six-Pack model could not generally be sold into the United States. Jensen historian Richard Calver's production breakdown explains the schedule: 12 LHD European cars used prefix 132, while one SP used prefix 134. Calver records that this final special-order car was built to US specification even though the Six-Pack engine was not US-legal, and says it was ultimately sold in Britain.
So 134 is meaningful factory identity evidence, but it is not proof that the car was delivered new in America. On an SP where market history affects the description or value, obtain the chassis-linked build record and destination history rather than turning the prefix into a delivery claim.
The same logic applies more broadly to this guide: decode the factory schedule first, then establish what actually happened to the individual car.
Why a genuine SP may no longer have its Six-Pack
This is where visual identification becomes particularly unreliable.
The Jensen Museum's archival history of the SP, based partly on former Jensen employees, describes persistent carburation problems. Under-bonnet heat could upset the Six-Pack setup, and the vacuum-operated outboard carburettors could make the engine's response difficult to manage. Jensen's technical staff ultimately developed a remedy using a Carter Thermoquad in place of the Six-Pack.
The Museum records that owners had cars converted by Jensen Motors or distributors. It estimates that a substantial minority of SPs lost their original Six-Pack arrangement in period.
That changes the authentication question. A Jensen with a single four-barrel carburettor is not automatically a standard Interceptor. If its chassis and factory records establish it as an SP, later carburation does not rewrite what Jensen built.
The reverse is also true. A standard 7.2 Mk III can acquire a Six-Pack, a louvred bonnet, badges or other SP-style parts. Those additions may be period-correct components, but they do not turn a standard chassis into a factory SP.
What visible details should an SP have?
Once the chassis identity makes sense, visible details become useful evidence about originality.
The Jensen Museum's engine-bay reference documents the SP-specific Six-Pack carburettor and manifold assembly, its distinctive air-can, a particular coil position and ribbed exhaust manifolds among the details found on original cars. Period descriptions also associate the SP with the extensively louvred bonnet, blue badging and a vinyl roof treatment.
None of those should be treated as an isolated pass/fail test.

The useful distinction is between identity and originality. A genuine SP with a period carburettor conversion is still a genuine SP, but it is no longer original in that area. A standard Interceptor wearing every obvious SP visual cue remains a standard Interceptor unless the chassis history says otherwise.
Even SP Number One complicates 'matching numbers'
The first production SP is a good warning against overly rigid rules. The Jensen Museum identifies 131/4254 as SP Number One and records that its G-series engine apparently failed during press testing. Jensen Motors then fitted an H-series engine.
That does not make the car any less the first production SP. It means the engine history has to be interpreted alongside the factory record.
For a collector, matching numbers is most useful when the seller can show which number matches which surviving document. A claim about an engine number should be separated from claims about the originality of its carburettors, heads, ignition, exhaust manifolds or other replaceable parts.

A practical way to authenticate an SP
If you are inspecting a car advertised as a Jensen SP, work from evidence that is hardest to change toward evidence that is easiest to change.
- Record the complete chassis number. Check whether its factory schedule is consistent with an SP and whether the number itself appears physically and documentarily coherent.
- Obtain chassis-linked factory evidence. A Jensen Statement of Origin, build record or surviving factory correspondence is substantially more useful than an advert description.
- Reconcile the engine number and history. Establish what engine is present, whether it is documented with the chassis and whether any replacement occurred in period or during restoration.
- Build a timeline. Old invoices, photographs and correspondence can show when carburation, bonnet, engine, gearbox or trim changed.
- Inspect SP-specific hardware. Use the Six-Pack system, air-can, manifolds and other period details to assess originality after identity is established.
- Treat badges and cosmetic clues last. They help a quick inspection, but they are among the easiest details to add later.
For a restored car, this method is more useful than trying to find one supposedly definitive visual feature.
TMJC's 1972 7.2 Mk III shows the other side of the problem
The Matt Johnston Collection's current 1972 Jensen Interceptor Mk III 7.2 V8 is useful precisely because it is not presented as an SP.
TMJC records a 7.2-litre Chrysler V8, right-hand drive and automatic transmission, with a Statement of Origin confirming factory specification and matching-number engine and gearbox claims. Its later history also records major mechanical work, including replacement aluminium cylinder heads and cooling upgrades.
That combination illustrates both halves of the identification problem. The 7.2-litre engine does not establish SP identity, and later component changes do not erase the underlying factory identity when the chassis record is known.

Does 7.2 litres mean a Jensen is an SP?
No. The SP used a 7.2-litre 440, but standard Mk III Interceptors also received 440 engines. Chassis identity and factory documentation are more discriminating than displacement.
Can a genuine Jensen SP have a single carburettor?
Yes. Jensen Museum research records period conversions from the troublesome Six-Pack arrangement to a Carter Thermoquad, including work associated with Jensen Motors and distributors. A single-carburettor SP therefore needs its history investigated; it should not be dismissed solely because the Six-Pack is absent.
Can a standard Interceptor be made into an SP?
It can be modified to resemble or perform like one, but that does not change its factory identity. A Six-Pack, SP bonnet or badges can be fitted later. When the distinction affects description or value, the car should be represented according to its documented chassis history.
