An E39 ALPINA B10 is not one fixed specification. It is a family of Buchloe-built derivatives based on BMW's E39 5 Series, spanning straight-six and V8 engines, saloon and Touring bodies, and different transmission arrangements.

That distinction matters. A power figure, gearbox description or production number that is correct for a B10 V8 S may be wrong for a B10 3.3. Start with the complete model name, then verify the individual car.

E39 B10 at a glance

Specialist records consistently separate four petrol B10 branches:

Those periods are rounded specialist ranges, not exact production certificates. The sources differ in how they describe endpoint years and months, so Garage does not turn the table into precise factory start-and-stop dates.

The E39 D10 BiTurbo belongs in the wider ALPINA E39 story, but it is a separate diesel model rather than a B10 derivative.

Why ALPINA is more than a trim level

A 1999 B10 was not simply a BMW 5 Series wearing different wheels and badges. BMW Group describes ALPINA as a registered vehicle manufacturer from 1983. During the long-running partnership, base cars were pre-assembled on BMW production lines before ALPINA completed work in Buchloe, including changes to engines and transmissions, chassis, aerodynamics and interiors.

That manufacturing relationship explains why an authentic car can carry both BMW-series identity and separate ALPINA model, chassis or production records. It also explains why a standard E39 specification sheet is only the starting point.

The straight-six branch: B10 3.2 and 3.3

The specialist ALPINA-Archive places the B10 3.2's introduction in March 1997 and its replacement by the B10 3.3 in 1999. It describes the 3.2 with a five-speed manual gearbox.

For the 3.3, the same archive records a March 1999 Geneva introduction. It then places the facelift version and optional Switch-Tronic gearbox in March 2001. This is the useful chronological dividing line: an early manual 3.3 and a later Switch-Tronic 3.3 belong to the same derivative family, but they are not the same configuration.

Do not treat the B10 3.3's body-style totals as manual-production totals. Saloon, Touring and gearbox counts answer different questions, and no opened factory or UK-importer record reconciles them here.

The V8 branch: B10 V8 and V8 S

The B10 V8 is a separate technical branch, based on the BMW E39 540i rather than the six-cylinder donor used for the early B10 3.2 and 3.3 story. Specialist history records its March 1997 introduction, a revised engine for 1999 and the E39 facelift changes in 2000. It describes five-speed Switch-Tronic as standard.

The later B10 V8 S sits at the end of the E39 B10 line. Its capacity, output and production figures must stay with that derivative. They should not be copied onto an earlier V8, and neither V8 should be used as the specification template for a B10 3.3.

This is why adverts headed only "E39 B10" are incomplete. The suffix is part of the identity.

What comes from the BMW E39 base car?

BMW Group Classic dates the underlying BMW 5 Series E39 to April 1995-May 2004. It highlights extensive use of aluminium in the chassis and rear air suspension with level control on Touring models.

Those are important platform facts, but the dates and almost 1.5 million BMW sales are not ALPINA B10 production figures. ALPINA's model programme occupied only part of the E39 lifecycle and used derivative-specific engines, transmissions, chassis tuning, wheels, aerodynamics and interiors.

For maintenance, a B10 therefore has two layers:

  • age-related E39 structure, cooling, suspension, electrical and body concerns;
  • ALPINA-specific mechanical specification, calibration, wheels, trim and documentary identity.

Both need attention.

A TMJC B10 3.3 example

The Matt Johnston Collection advertised V491EBC as a 1999 right-hand-drive B10 3.3 saloon with a 3,300 cc straight-six and five-speed manual gearbox. The listing also described Alpina Blau II paint, ALPINA-pattern cloth and an extensive service-history file.

That car is useful evidence of a real UK-market early manual configuration. Its mileage, condition, options and preparation remain facts about that individual advert, not about every E39 B10.

The same listing called it one of 112 B10 3.3 saloons supplied to the UK. No opened period ALPINA or UK-importer document verifies that number, so it remains an attributed seller claim rather than a structured production fact.

How to verify an E39 ALPINA B10

Begin with documents, not replaceable details.

ALPINA CLASSIC offers delivery certificates for almost all BMW ALPINA vehicles built between 1978 and 2025. The listed fields can include:

  • ALPINA model designation;
  • BMW series;
  • ALPINA chassis number;
  • ALPINA production number;
  • BMW chassis number;
  • engine number;
  • production month;
  • an extract from the original vehicle invoice;
  • general technical data.

That creates a practical evidence order:

  1. Obtain the ALPINA delivery record or equivalent factory documentation.
  2. Reconcile its model, chassis, production and engine numbers with the car.
  3. Compare period invoices, registration history and service records.
  4. Check whether the engine, gearbox, chassis equipment, wheels and trim match the documented derivative.
  5. Treat badges, spoilers, stripes, wheels and plaques as supporting details, not identity proof on their own.

ALPINA CLASSIC explicitly warns that a delivery certificate records original delivery condition; it does not certify the car's present originality, condition or value. The document starts the inspection rather than replacing it.

Body and corrosion checks

A B10 inherits the E39's ageing body structure. A reputable E39 specialist guide recommends close inspection around wheelarch lips, the fuel filler, bonnet edges, rear bumper area, sills and jacking points. Plastic sill covers can hide corrosion, while earlier repairs may conceal or accelerate deterioration.

For a Touring, also inspect both tailgate releases, support struts and the body-to-tailgate wiring. Check carpets and luggage areas for damp; disturbed door membranes and water ingress can create electrical problems as well as interior damage.

ALPINA body addenda deserve their own check. Confirm spoilers, stripes, badging and wheels against the build record and period photographs. Condition is separate from identity: genuine parts can be damaged, replacements can be correct, and attractive replicas do not prove a car's origin.

Engine and cooling checks

Identify the exact derivative before applying engine advice. The straight-six and V8 branches have different engines, and even the V8 history contains revisions.

Across the E39 base, cooling-system condition and service history are essential. Inspect the radiator, water pump, hoses and expansion components for leakage or evidence of overheating. Check oil leaks, intake or breather faults and uneven running, then interpret any findings against the correct ALPINA engine specification.

Avoid universal statements such as "all B10s have this engine issue" unless the claim is tied to an exact engine and build period. For a rare modified-manufacturer car, an invoice showing what was fitted and why is often more useful than a generic forum list.

Gearbox, chassis and brakes

A five-speed manual B10 3.2 or early 3.3 should be assessed as a manual car: shift quality, clutch operation, driveline noise and supporting history all matter.

A Switch-Tronic car needs smooth automatic operation and a functioning manual-selection system. But "Switch-Tronic" does not make every E39 B10 mechanically interchangeable; confirm the gearbox against the exact derivative and build record.

Inspect suspension bushes, dampers, steering links, wheel bearings, brake condition and ABS warning behavior. On a Touring, verify rear self-levelling operation and look for air leaks or an uneven stance. ALPINA-specific dampers, springs, brakes and wheel/tyre fitments should be checked against correct part references rather than assumed from a standard E39.

Interior and electrical checks

E39 age can bring pixel failures, climate-control or audio faults, sagging headlining, failed seat or airbag sensors and damaged wiring. Confirm that warning lights illuminate at startup and extinguish normally; a dark warning lamp is not evidence that a system is healthy.

Then compare ALPINA-specific instruments, steering wheel, upholstery, wood and trim with the delivery record. Individual customer specification was part of the marque's appeal, so an unusual combination is not automatically incorrect. Equally, familiar ALPINA colours and motifs are easy to reproduce.

Questions to ask before buying

  • What exact derivative and production number does ALPINA record?
  • Does the engine and gearbox match the delivery documentation?
  • Is it a saloon or Touring, and are body-specific systems working?
  • Which mechanical components are ALPINA-specific, and are replacements documented?
  • Is there evidence of overheating, corrosion or water ingress?
  • Do warning lights and electrical systems behave correctly?
  • Can the seller support any production-total or UK-supply claim with a primary document?
  • Does the service history show specialists who understood the exact derivative?

The best E39 B10 is not defined by the longest option list or the lowest mileage alone. A coherent identity, sound structure, correct mechanical specification and a history that explains the car are more durable evidence.

Evidence boundary

The former official ALPINA E39 model-history URL now redirects to the new BMW ALPINA brand site, so it was not used as readable model evidence. Exact derivative chronology comes from opened specialist sources and is labelled accordingly. No universal engine, power, gearbox or production-total fact is assigned to the generation.
