The ALPINA B10 E34 is not one fixed specification. It is a family of ALPINA cars built around BMW's third-generation 5 Series, and the name covers much more than the famous B10 Bi-Turbo.

The current specialist ALPINA-Archive separates five E34 B10 groups: B10 3.5/1, B10 BiTurbo, B10 3.0 Allrad, B10 4.0 and B10 4.6. Between them are naturally aspirated and twin-turbo straight-sixes, rear- and all-wheel drive, V8 engines, and both saloon and Touring bodies.

That variety is the key to researching one properly. “B10 E34” tells you the generation. The derivative tells you the engine, drivetrain, body and period evidence you should actually use.

Which ALPINA B10 E34 versions existed?

The table below uses the current unofficial ALPINA-Archive as a family map. Its production figures are useful specialist records, not factory-certified totals.

Those five lines are already enough to show why a generic “ALPINA B10 E34 specification” is unsafe. Even within one BMW chassis generation, engine layout, aspiration, driven wheels, gearbox choices and body style changed substantially.

The BMW E34 underneath the ALPINA story

BMW Group Classic describes the E34 as the third generation of the 5 Series, officially presented in January 1988. BMW gives the underlying generation a production span of November 1987 to June 1996.

It was a broad platform in its own right. BMW offered saloon and Touring bodies, rear- and four-wheel drive, and four-, six- and eight-cylinder engines across the range. That matters because ALPINA did not have to force every B10 idea into the same mechanical template: the E34 era gave it a basis for straight-six performance, an all-wheel-drive branch and later V8 cars.

BMW's production chronology is platform context, not an ALPINA production table. Individual B10 derivative dates sit inside that larger E34 window and need their own evidence.

B10 3.5/1: the opening E34 B10

The unofficial archive describes the B10 3.5/1 as the first ALPINA car based on the third-generation E34 5 Series. Its model page records production from April 1988 to December 1992 and 572 cars.

This is the naturally aspirated straight-six starting point for the E34 B10 story. The archive describes extensive ALPINA engine work rather than a badge-only conversion, alongside ALPINA suspension, braking, wheel and interior changes.

It also records more than one transmission choice: a five-speed manual with a four-speed automatic available as an option. That is a useful warning for anyone authenticating an individual car. The derivative name alone does not prove which gearbox a particular B10 3.5/1 left the factory with.

The figure of 572 should remain attributed to the specialist archive until stronger primary production documentation is available. Treat it as an archive figure rather than a factory-certified total.

B10 Bi-Turbo: the famous branch, not the whole generation

The B10 Bi-Turbo is the E34 B10 most likely to dominate search results, but it is only one branch of the family.

Road & Track's retrospective says ALPINA spent two years developing the car before its 1989 Geneva Motor Show debut. It was based on the BMW 535i, but the changes went far beyond adding two turbochargers: the article describes internal engine work, bespoke turbo and intercooler hardware, drivetrain changes, a limited-slip differential, suspension changes and larger brakes.

Road & Track reports 355 hp and 380 lb-ft, while the ALPINA archive uses the European 360 PS / 520 Nm framing. Those are two expressions of the same derivative's period performance story, not numbers that should be attached to every E34 B10.

The stronger historical point is the scale. Road & Track and the current archive both record 507 B10 Bi-Turbos. That makes it a substantial part of E34 B10 history rather than a one-off halo exercise.

Exact end-date wording has not always been equally precise across historical summaries, so this page does not turn one month into a new universal fact. The robust conclusions are the 1989 debut, 535i basis, major ALPINA engineering work and 507-car specialist/historical total.

B10 3.0 Allrad: all-wheel drive changes the formula

The B10 3.0 Allrad is the clearest evidence that “B10 E34” does not automatically mean rear-wheel drive.

The unofficial archive says the model was based on the BMW 525iX. ALPINA enlarged the six-cylinder engine to 3.0 litres and offered the finished B10 in both saloon and Touring forms.

Its current production register records 64 saloons and 70 Tourings, for 134 cars in total. More important than the number is what the derivative represents: all-wheel drive and the Touring body both sit legitimately inside the E34 B10 family.

That has practical consequences when checking an advert. A B10 3.0 Allrad should not be compared against Bi-Turbo rear-axle hardware or a V8 B10 specification simply because all three wear B10 badges.

B10 4.0 and 4.6: the V8 phase

BMW's E34 range expanded into V8 power, and the B10 family changed with it.

The unofficial archive describes the B10 4.0 as part of the move away from the older M30 straight-six era. It records both saloon and Touring forms and 49 cars in total. Its current model page and older body register disagree on the exact end month, so this page does not present one production window as settled. The archive's model data also shows that ALPINA did not simply leave the underlying BMW V8 untouched: it records different pistons, intake and engine-management work, along with ALPINA chassis and appearance changes.

The B10 4.6 pushed that V8 route further. The archive consistently records 46 cars in total, split between saloon and Touring bodies, but its current model page and older body register disagree on the exact end month. This page therefore does not turn one production window into a settled fact. Its engine, gearbox and performance figures differ from the 4.0, so “V8 B10” is still not a sufficiently exact specification by itself.

These low archive totals make the V8 derivatives interesting to collectors, but the source status matters. They are archive-produced totals from an unofficial specialist resource, not figures this page is presenting as newly audited factory ledger counts.

Saloon and Touring production needs derivative-level evidence

BMW Group Classic confirms that Touring was part of the wider E34 generation, but not every B10 derivative used every body style.

The current ALPINA archive explicitly splits body production for three branches:

  • B10 3.0 Allrad: 64 saloons and 70 Tourings;
  • B10 4.0: 45 saloons and 4 Tourings;
  • B10 4.6: 27 saloons and 19 Tourings.

That is much more useful than saying “the E34 B10 came as an estate”. It tells you which derivative needs Touring-specific evidence and prevents a body style from being projected onto the Bi-Turbo or 3.5/1 without support.

For an individual car, original market matters too. Archive entries show cars across several countries, but scattered surviving examples are not a reliable substitute for a period market programme. Do not infer UK availability or RHD production totals from one registry entry.

Why B10 E34 dates can differ between sources

An old performance car can legitimately carry several dates:

  • BMW base-car production;
  • ALPINA completion;
  • motor-show introduction;
  • first customer delivery;
  • first registration;
  • the start or end of a particular body or derivative batch.

Those events can land in different months. The archive itself also shows why exact month ranges need care: its current model pages and older body registers do not always agree on the final production month for the B10 Bi-Turbo, 3.0 Allrad, 4.0 or 4.6. The production totals and body splits are more consistent than those month ranges, so exact start/end dates should stay source-qualified unless supported by vehicle-specific ALPINA documentation.

For a collector car, the safest approach is to identify the exact derivative first and then use the car's own production documentation rather than inferring configuration from registration year alone.

How to authenticate an E34 B10

Wheels, spoilers, stripes and badges are useful visual clues, but they are all components that can be added to an ordinary BMW later. Documentary identity is stronger.

ALPINA CLASSIC offers a Delivery Certificate for almost all BMW ALPINA automobiles built between 1978 and 2025. Depending on the surviving file, it can include:

  • ALPINA model designation;
  • BMW series;
  • ALPINA chassis number;
  • ALPINA production number;
  • BMW chassis number;
  • engine number;
  • production month;
  • an extract from the original vehicle invoice; and
  • general technical data.

That gives an E34 buyer a sensible evidence chain: establish the ALPINA derivative and numbers from the manufacturer-side record, then compare those records with the physical car and its history.

The certificate also has an important limit. ALPINA CLASSIC says it records original delivery condition; it does not certify that the car remains completely original today, nor does it certify current condition or value. A correct factory identity and a presently original car are related questions, not the same question.

What should you establish before using an E34 B10 specification?

Start with five things:

  1. Exact derivative. 3.5/1, Bi-Turbo, 3.0 Allrad, 4.0 and 4.6 do not share one powertrain.
  2. Body style. Touring availability is derivative-specific.
  3. Driven wheels. The 3.0 Allrad is the obvious exception to a rear-wheel-drive assumption.
  4. Production and market documentation. Build/completion and registration dates answer different questions.
  5. Current versus original specification. Engines, gearboxes, suspension and trim can be changed over three decades without changing what the car originally left ALPINA as.

Once those are established, derivative-level technical data becomes useful. Before that, a generic B10 table can create more confusion than clarity.

Why the E34 matters in B10 history

The E34 chapter shows how quickly the B10 badge expanded beyond one large-engine saloon formula. It starts with a naturally aspirated straight-six, adds the extraordinary Bi-Turbo, branches into all-wheel drive and Touring bodywork, and finishes with scarce V8 derivatives.

That breadth is why the E34 B10 is best understood as a family rather than one specification. The cars share the BMW platform and period, but the mechanical details belong to each derivative.
