The ALPINA B10 3.0 Allrad is one of the most unusual E34 B10 derivatives. Rather than starting from the rear-wheel-drive 535i used for the BiTurbo, it was based on BMW's E34 525iX, the first all-wheel-drive 5 Series.

ALPINA enlarged the six-cylinder engine to roughly 3.0 litres. Swiss type-approval records identify the finished BMW/ALPINA with engine designation E3/1, 2,995.82 cc, 170 kW at 5,800 rpm and 312 Nm at 4,200 rpm. The car was offered as both a saloon and a Touring. The specialist ALPINA-Archive records 64 saloons and 70 Tourings, or 134 cars combined; that production figure is useful but should be treated as an attributed specialist-archive count rather than a factory-certified ledger total.

The figures above describe the B10 3.0 Allrad power unit or the complete derivative. Body-specific dimensions and weights should not be copied between saloon and Touring without checking the relevant approval record.

Why the BMW 525iX basis matters

The donor car is central to understanding the 3.0 Allrad. BMW Group Classic describes the 525iX as the first all-wheel-drive 5 Series. From 1991, BMW offered the E34 525i with a system developed from the earlier E30 all-wheel-drive technology.

BMW says the E34 system introduced electronically controlled, fully variable distribution of drive torque between the front and rear axles. Its purpose was not only winter traction, but also stability and controllability when cornering or reacting quickly.

That gives the 3.0 Allrad a very different technical identity from the rear-wheel-drive B10 3.5/1, BiTurbo and V8 cars. It is not simply an engine specification inside the same chassis formula; the underlying drivetrain architecture is different.

The donor 525iX itself used a 2,494 cc six-cylinder engine producing 192 hp according to BMW Group Classic. Those are BMW donor figures, not B10 specifications. The ALPINA's regulatory record instead shows the enlarged E3/1 engine at 2,995.82 cc and 170 kW.

What ALPINA changed

The clearest defensible change is the engine. ALPINA-Archive says the 525iX's displacement was increased from 2.5 to 3.0 litres and output rose from 192 to 231 bhp. Swiss approval documentation gives the finished engine a more precise identity: E3/1, six cylinders, 86 mm bore and 86 mm stroke, 2,995.82 cc, 170 kW at 5,800 rpm and 312 Nm at 4,200 rpm.

The square 86 x 86 mm dimensions are particularly useful for identification because they come from regulatory documentation rather than a modern specification aggregator.

The surviving approval also identifies the manufacturer as ALPINA B. Bovensiepen GmbH + Co KG and the vehicle as BMW/ALPINA, which is a useful reminder that a genuine period ALPINA is more than a BMW wearing later wheels, stripes or badges.

Saloon and Touring production

The 3.0 Allrad is one of the E34 B10 derivatives where body style materially affects the production story.

The current ALPINA-Archive model page gives:

  • B10 3.0 Allrad saloon: 64 produced, October 1993 to October 1995;
  • B10 3.0 Allrad Touring: 70 produced, November 1993 to May 1996.

That yields 134 cars in total and matches the current archive's E34 model index total.

There is, however, a chronology caveat. An older version of the same unofficial register gives earlier end months for both bodies. Without a factory production ledger, the safest summary is therefore 1993–1996, with the detailed month ranges attributed to the archive rather than presented as unquestionable factory dates.

The split also explains why a single body specification can be misleading. A Touring type approval records estate-specific dimensions, weights and equipment that should not automatically be assigned to the saloon.

The Touring approval: unusually useful primary evidence

A surviving Swiss Federal Roads Office type approval for the B10 3.0 Allrad Touring is valuable because it records the car as an approved BMW/ALPINA product rather than describing it retrospectively.

It names ALPINA as manufacturer and records the E3/1 engine, six cylinders, 2,995.82 cc, 170 kW at 5,800 rpm and 312 Nm at 4,200 rpm. It also records four-wheel disc service brakes with ABS, 235/45 R17 tyres and 8 x 17 ALPINA wheels for that approved Touring configuration.

For the Touring specifically, the document records a 4,720 mm length and 2,761 mm wheelbase. Those dimensions are useful when checking the regulatory specification of a Touring, but they are not promoted here as universal facts for every body configuration.

How rare is the B10 3.0 Allrad?

The specialist archive's 134-car total makes the derivative much less numerous than the better-known B10 3.5/1 or BiTurbo. But rarity claims need care.

The useful statement is the traceable one: ALPINA-Archive currently records 64 saloons and 70 Tourings. It is explicitly an unofficial archive, so a seller claiming a still narrower number — by market, steering side, gearbox or colour — should be able to show where that figure comes from.

This is especially important for UK-market claims. No manufacturer or period-importer source currently establishes a reliable RHD or UK-supplied total, so no such number is presented as fact here.

How to identify a genuine B10 3.0 Allrad

Start with documentary identity rather than appearance.

The Swiss approvals record the vehicle as BMW/ALPINA B10 3.0 Allrad and identify E3/1 as the engine marking. Period regulatory paperwork can therefore provide strong cross-checks against the physical car.

ALPINA CLASSIC also offers Delivery Certificates for many historic BMW ALPINA vehicles. Depending on the vehicle and surviving records, these can include ALPINA model designation, BMW series, ALPINA chassis number, ALPINA production number, BMW chassis number, engine number and production month.

A Delivery Certificate describes the car's original delivery condition. It is not a certificate that every component fitted today is original, nor is it a condition or valuation report. For a collector car, compare the documentary record with the chassis, engine markings, production plaque and the actual equipment fitted.

What to inspect on a surviving car

The available evidence is strong on identity and specification but does not justify inventing a generic failure list for a model built in only modest numbers.

A sensible inspection should therefore focus on verifiable areas:

  • confirm chassis, production and engine identity against period or ALPINA documentation;
  • establish that the all-wheel-drive system operates correctly and that repairs have not substituted incompatible ordinary E34 components;
  • check that engine specification and management hardware correspond to the E3/1 car rather than a standard 525iX;
  • verify body-specific suspension, brakes, wheels and tyres against documentation for the exact saloon or Touring;
  • inspect the normal age-related structure, cooling, fuel, braking and electrical systems expected on a 1990s E34, then add specialist ALPINA/525iX expertise for the rare drivetrain and engine parts.

Claims about a particular recurring B10 3.0 Allrad failure should be supported by specialist workshop evidence rather than repeated from one owner's repair history.

B10 3.0 Allrad vs B10 BiTurbo

The two cars answer very different questions despite sharing the B10 E34 name.

The BiTurbo starts from the 535i and pursues extreme turbocharged performance through a heavily reworked rear-wheel-drive package. The 3.0 Allrad starts from the 525iX and preserves the all-wheel-drive concept while adding ALPINA's larger naturally aspirated six-cylinder engine.

For a collector, that makes the Allrad interesting less as a slower substitute for a BiTurbo and more as a separate engineering branch: the rare intersection of E34 Touring/saloon practicality, BMW's early electronically controlled all-wheel drive and ALPINA power-unit development.
