The Porsche 911 Targa of the 996 generation is one of the more distinctive ways to buy a water-cooled 911. It combines the facelift-era 3.6-litre Carrera powertrain with a large electrically sliding glass roof and a lift-up rear window that gives unusually direct access to the rear luggage area.
That combination is important because the 996 Targa is often described too loosely. It was not a conventional removable-panel Targa, it was not an all-wheel-drive Targa 4, and it was not a one-year 2003 special. Porsche says the 996 Targa became available in December 2001, with the company’s own Museum material placing its introduction in autumn 2001.
For a buyer today, the best way to approach one is to separate three questions: is it the correct factory derivative, does the glass-roof and rear-hatch system work properly, and what does the service history actually prove about the M96 engine and the rest of the car?

Porsche’s derivative-specific Museum sheet is particularly useful because it removes a common source of confusion: there was no all-wheel-drive version of the 996 Targa. That makes the 996 materially different from the following 997 generation, where Porsche sold the Targa as the all-wheel-drive Targa 4 and Targa 4S.
Porsche’s own sources use slightly different language depending on whether they are describing launch timing or model years. The company’s Targa history says the Type 996 Targa was available from December 2001, while Porsche Museum material says the Targa joined the fifth-generation 911 range in autumn 2001. Porsche also illustrates the car as a 911 Targa 3.6, model year 2002.
Those statements fit together. They do not support the idea that the 996 Targa belonged only to the 2003 production year.
That distinction matters because a surviving advert for TMJC-associated car RK53EXN calls the Targa “exclusive to the 2003 production run”. Porsche’s chronology contradicts that. Porsche Cars North America also records an all-new Targa in its 2002 chronology and still lists Targa among the 911 body styles in the 2004 model line-up.
A registration date still should not be used as a substitute for a build date. For an individual car, the VIN-linked specification, production date and original paperwork are stronger evidence than the year on the number plate.
The roof is the defining feature of the car, and calling it simply a large sunroof undersells the engineering.
Porsche describes the 996 Targa roof as a three-piece glass structure with around 1.5 square metres of glass. The glass is green-tinted laminated safety glass. The centre section moves electrically rearwards, while a small wind deflector rises at the front edge when the roof opens.
There is also an electrically operated interior blind. Porsche’s technical description says that when the glass roof is opened, the blind first closes automatically before the glass section moves back. With the roof shut, the blind can be used independently to reduce light and heat inside the cabin.
The other major change was behind the roof. The 996 became the first 911 with a lift-up rear window. Porsche says the rear glass could be electrically released to give easier access to the extended rear storage area, quoting up to 230 litres of accessible storage in its Targa history.
That rear opening is one reason a 996 Targa feels unusually practical for a 911 of its period. Small bags or coats can be reached without folding a seat or working through a conventional side door.
Yes. Porsche Museum’s derivative sheet explicitly says that no all-wheel-drive version of the 996 Targa was planned.
This is easy to muddle because the next-generation 997 Targa arrived as Targa 4 and Targa 4S, both all-wheel drive. Search results, used-car adverts and later-model articles can therefore make “Targa” look inseparable from four-wheel drive when that is not true of the Type 996.
For a 996, the Targa should be understood as a rear-wheel-drive Carrera-derived model with its own glass-roof body treatment rather than as the predecessor of an all-wheel-drive-only drivetrain philosophy.
The 996 Targa belongs to the later, facelift-era naturally aspirated Carrera family. Porsche’s fifth-generation engine history records the 996’s change from a 3.4-litre 300 PS flat-six to a 3.6-litre engine producing 320 PS after the 2002 model update. Porsche Museum’s Targa sheet identifies the Targa specifically as using a 3.6-litre naturally aspirated engine.
Porsche offered the Targa with a six-speed manual or a five-speed Tiptronic S. That means a manual car such as RK53EXN uses a normal factory configuration, not a conversion.
For a buyer, verify the actual gearbox and drivetrain of the car in front of you, then judge its condition and history independently. Do not assume a generic 996 specification table applies to every market or transmission.
The Targa arrived after the Type 996 had already entered its major facelift phase. Porsche’s wider 996 history records the 2002 model update with revised front styling and the move to the 3.6-litre 320 PS Carrera engine.
That means the factory 996 Targa is naturally associated with the later front-end treatment rather than the early 3.4-litre Carrera specification. If a car is being advertised as a 996 Targa but its identity appears inconsistent with the later Targa package, investigate the VIN and body history rather than trying to explain the discrepancy from registration year alone.
This is also why the exact word “facelift” can be less useful than the evidence. A genuine Targa’s factory identity, VIN and production specification matter more than whether an advert writer calls it a 996.1, 996.2 or simply a 2003 car.
There is a temptation to answer this with a single internet verdict, but the evidence is more useful when treated carefully.
UK Porsche specialist Revolution describes the 996 Targa roof mechanism as having proved generally reliable in its experience. It also notes that water ingress can occur and says blocked drainage channels are a common cause. That is a much more useful starting point than assuming every damp Targa needs a roof mechanism.
At the same time, owner forums contain repeated accounts of roofs becoming slow, sticking part-way through their travel, needing cable work, or requiring labour-intensive removal of the roof assembly. Those discussions are valuable because they show the questions real owners encounter; they are not a statistically reliable failure-rate study.
For a buyer, the practical conclusion is to test the system rather than predict it.
A roof that works once on a warm, dry viewing is not the same as a roof with a documented history of correct operation and maintenance.
The rear glass is not just a styling feature. It is part of the Targa’s practical identity and should be treated as a functioning mechanism in its own right.
Make sure the release works, the glass lifts normally, the hinges and struts behave consistently, the latch closes without being slammed and the seal area is dry. If the rear hatch or roof refuses to operate, do not assume the fault is one cheap switch until the system has been properly diagnosed.
The relationship between roof, hatch, electrical switches and drainage is exactly why a specialist pre-purchase inspection can be more useful on a Targa than a quick check of paint and service stamps.
The 996 Targa uses the naturally aspirated water-cooled Carrera-family engine rather than the different Turbo/GT engine architecture. That puts it inside the broader set of M96-era ownership questions buyers regularly encounter.
Specialists including Revolution and Hartech discuss intermediate-shaft bearing failure, rear-main-seal leakage, scored or damaged cylinders, cracked liners and other engine faults across relevant water-cooled Porsche applications. The important editorial point is not to turn that list into a diagnosis of every 996 Targa.
A car with strong invoices can be more interesting than one with a vague claim that an issue has been “done”. Ask exactly what work was carried out, at what mileage, by whom and why.
For an engine repair or rebuild, useful paperwork should identify the scope of strip-down, measured condition, cylinders or liners addressed, bearing work, timing components, seals, clutch-related work where applicable, parts used and any warranty offered. An £8,000 invoice tells you there was substantial expenditure; it does not tell you what was repaired unless you read it.
TMJC’s surviving Car & Classic listing for RK53EXN provides a useful real-world example without needing to pretend one car defines the whole derivative.
The advert describes a right-hand-drive, six-speed manual 996 Targa registered in 2004 and showing 151,378 miles. It says the same owner had kept the car since August 2013, that the stamped service book ran from 10,081 to 150,424 miles, and that more than £15,000 of Porsche-specialist invoices had been accumulated within the previous five years.
The largest single claim is an £8,050 engine overhaul in January 2025. The advert also lists replacement or recent work involving the rear exhaust boxes, radiators, ignition coil, rear brakes, front and rear dampers, top mounts, suspension arms and inner and outer track rods.
That is potentially valuable history on a high-mileage car, but it needs to be read properly. The surviving listing does not reproduce the engine invoice line by line, so this page does not claim that RK53EXN received a particular liner solution, IMS upgrade, bearing package or full internal rebuild. The invoice itself would decide that.
The same principle applies to the chassis. A long list of recent suspension parts can make a car drive much better, but it does not turn a 151,000-mile shell into a low-mileage car. Provenance is strongest when each major job is documented and tied to a date and mileage.
Mileage on its own is a poor summary of a 20-plus-year-old sports car. A better check is to divide the history into systems:
Engine: what has actually been rebuilt, inspected or replaced, and what remains original?
Cooling: radiators, condensers, hoses, water pump and evidence of correct coolant-system work.
Transmission and clutch: gearbox operation, clutch history on a manual, fluid servicing and any differential or driveshaft work.
Suspension and steering: dampers, top mounts, control arms, track rods, geometry and tyre wear.
Brakes: discs, pads, lines and parking-brake condition.
Targa system: roof movement, cables/mechanism history, seals, drains, blind and rear hatch.
Body: accident history, corrosion checks, paintwork and water-ingress evidence.
This makes a thick invoice folder much easier to evaluate than simply adding up the money spent.
A convincing car should make sense as a whole.
Start with the VIN and original specification. Confirm it is a Targa and not a modified Coupe. Check that the drivetrain is consistent with Porsche’s rear-wheel-drive Targa specification and that the gearbox matches the build evidence.
Then inspect the parts that make the Targa different. The roof should move smoothly, the blind should operate, the rear glass should release and latch, and the interior should be dry. These are more identity-specific checks than looking for the usual 996 headlights or facelift bumpers.
After that, evaluate it like any serious 996 purchase: cold start, fluids, exhaust, cooling system, clutch or Tiptronic operation, suspension noises, brakes, tyre condition, geometry and a specialist inspection of the engine where appropriate.
Finally, compare the advert with the paperwork. If an advert says “engine rebuilt”, “IMS done”, “roof overhauled” or “full suspension refresh”, the invoices should be detailed enough to explain what those phrases actually mean.
The word Targa covers very different engineering across 911 generations.
The 993 Targa established the sliding-glass-roof idea while keeping a coupe-like roofline. The 996 Targa developed that concept with a larger glass area and, for the first time, an opening rear window. The 997 Targa kept the glass-roof approach but moved the model into the all-wheel-drive Targa 4/Targa 4S range. Much later, the 991 reintroduced the visual theatre of a traditional Targa bar with a fully automatic roof mechanism.
That history explains why buying advice from one generation should not automatically be copied onto another. A search for “911 Targa roof problem” can easily mix mechanisms separated by decades.
