The BMW E39 540i Saloon with a six-speed manual gearbox is a genuine factory configuration, not merely a later enthusiast conversion. BMW Group Classic describes the 540i Sedan as a 4.4-litre V8 and explicitly highlights the combination of the eight-cylinder engine with a six-speed manual gearbox.
BMW's archive gives the 540i Sedan 4,398 cc, 286 hp / 210 kW at 5,700 rpm and a model-level top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph). It records 540i Sedan production from April 1995 to September 2003, although that date range should not be read as proof that the manual was offered in every market for every month of the run.

The important qualification is scope. BMW's table describes the 540i Sedan as a model. The six-speed manual is explicitly documented as an available factory combination, but the archive page does not give a separate production calendar for manual cars alone. UK allocation numbers and a manual-only production total should therefore be treated with caution unless supported by period factory records.
Was the E39 540i really available with a factory six-speed manual?
Yes. This is one point where a buyer does not need to rely on forum memory or classified-ad wording. BMW Group Classic says the V8 and six-speed manual combination was offered on the E39 540i Sedan.
That matters because manual E39 540is are unusual enough for buyers to encounter converted cars as well as genuine factory examples. A neat gear lever and three pedals are not, on their own, proof of how a car left the factory.
For a car being bought as a factory manual, start with its VIN/build data and documentary history. The current transmission, pedal box, shifter surround, trim and wiring should agree with that record, but physical components are supporting evidence rather than the strongest evidence: all can be changed.
Early M62B44 versus the revised 1998 engine
Not every E39 540i has exactly the same version of the 4.4-litre V8.
BMW's German Group Classic archive identifies the original engine as the M62B44. It then says that from 1998 a revised M62 was used with an electronically controlled throttle and variable camshaft timing (VANOS). BMW's separate 540i Touring archive names the revised engine M62B44TU and also places that technical revision from 1998.
That distinction is more useful than reducing the whole model to “4.4 V8”. An early car such as a 1996 example belongs to the pre-revision phase; a later car needs to be assessed against the revised engine specification.
The accessible BMW material does not establish one universally applicable day on which every saloon in every market changed over. For parts, originality or a pre-purchase inspection, use the individual build date and VIN rather than guessing from registration year.
What do BMW production codes tell us about the six-speed manual?
BMW UK's own parts catalogue gives another useful check on the factory manual story. Its technical compatibility table for a genuine BMW six-speed gear-shift knob lists the E39 540i Saloon under both the earlier DE51/DE52/DE61/DE62 production-code families and the later DN51/DN52/DN61/DN62 families.
The dates are revealing. The DE entries run into August or September 1998, while the DN entries begin between December 1997 and March 1998 depending on the code, then continue into 2003. In other words, BMW's own parts data shows an overlap around the 1998 transition, not one tidy date at which every 540i Saloon worldwide became a different specification overnight.
That evidence is useful in two ways. First, it independently corroborates genuine six-speed hardware across early and later 540i Saloon production-code families. Second, it is a warning against decoding an individual car from registration year alone.
There is also an important limit: BMW labels all of those compatibility rows simply M62. A parts-fitment table is not an engine build-sheet decoder, so the DE/DN codes should not be turned into a claim that one code automatically proves M62B44 and another automatically proves M62B44TU. For a particular car, the VIN, build data and engine documentation remain stronger evidence.
Does the 1998 engine change alter the power figure?
BMW's archive continues to list the 540i at 286 hp / 210 kW. The technical change is therefore not well described as a simple “more powerful facelift engine”.
The more interesting differences are in the engine's control and valve-timing hardware. This is also why a single internet checklist for “E39 540i problems” can be misleading: an early M62B44 and a later revised M62 do not have exactly the same hardware.
Torque figures are particularly easy to flatten incorrectly. BMW's 540i Touring archive gives 440 Nm for the technically revised application, but the reviewed primary material here does not provide a clean Saloon Manual torque table for both engine phases. This page therefore keeps torque out of the headline specification rather than pretending one number describes every car.
How can you verify a factory-manual E39 540i?
A sensible evidence order is:
- VIN/build specification — establish how the car was built before inspecting cosmetic clues.
- Period history — old invoices, service records, MOT history and earlier photographs can show that the manual configuration predates recent ownership.
- Transmission and installation — gearbox, clutch hydraulics, pedal assembly, wiring and coding should form a coherent factory-quality installation.
- Interior details — gear lever, gaiter and console trim should agree with the car's age and specification, but these are replaceable parts.
- Independent specialist inspection — useful when the value of the car depends materially on factory originality.
A claimed “factory manual” deserves stronger evidence than a seller saying it feels original. Equally, the existence of conversions does not make every manual suspicious: BMW itself documents the factory six-speed combination.
What should you inspect before buying an E39 540i manual?
By now, age and maintenance history matter at least as much as the original option list.
Look underneath for corrosion. Classics World highlights wheelarch lips, the fuel-filler area, sills and jacking points. Plastic sill covers can hide deterioration, so a clean visible outer panel is not the whole inspection.
Treat the cooling system seriously. Check for evidence of radiator, water-pump, hose and related cooling work, and investigate any history of overheating. On the V8, specialist inspection should also look for leaks in and around the engine V rather than only obvious external drips.
Assess the manual gearbox rather than simply celebrating that it is manual. Classics World describes E39 manuals as strong but says notchiness, an obstructive shift or signs of tired synchromesh deserve attention. Clutch take-up, driveline vibration and evidence of previous clutch/flywheel work are also useful context.
Inspect suspension wear. Control-arm bushes, top mounts, dampers and rear suspension components can all become age- and mileage-sensitive. Steering shimmy or clunks need diagnosis rather than being dismissed as “normal for an old BMW”.
Operate the electronics. ABS/DSC warnings, instrument pixels, climate control, windows, seats, central locking and other equipment should be tested. A highly optioned 540i can be mechanically healthy while carrying a long list of irritating electrical work.
What about timing-chain claims on early non-VANOS cars?
Be wary of absolute statements.
A surviving advert for TMJC's 1996 car describes the early non-VANOS engine as having “no timing chain issues”. That is seller wording about an individual car, not a BMW technical statement, and it is too broad to use as a model-wide buying rule.
The useful distinction is that the 1998 revision changed valve-timing and throttle-control hardware. That does not justify turning the earlier engine into a maintenance-free design. On any 540i, service history, cold-start behaviour, oil leaks, cooling history and a specialist's assessment of the actual engine matter more than a slogan attached to “pre-VANOS” or “TU”.
TMJC's 1996 E39 540i manual
TMJC has handled a useful real-world example of the early configuration. A surviving Car & Classic advert attributed to The Matt Johnston Collection records registration M50CDG as a 1996, right-hand-drive E39 540i with a 4.4-litre petrol V8 and factory six-speed manual gearbox, finished in Montreal Blue.
The advert also records substantial individual-car history, equipment and a replacement clutch and flywheel at 113,886 miles. Those details are provenance for that car, not the factory specification of every 540i.
There is currently no surviving indexed first-party TMJC inventory page for M50CDG that we can use to upgrade those individual-car claims beyond the syndication. For the model itself, BMW Group Classic remains the stronger specification authority.
What is still worth proving from period UK material?
A verified period UK BMW 5 Series Saloon brochure or order guide would be the best evidence for UK-specific gearbox availability, equipment and ordering scope. Until one is checked directly, this page does not claim a UK-only manual availability window, a UK manual production total or a definitive list of standard versus optional UK equipment.
