The BMW E39 is the fourth generation of the 5 Series. For the complete model series, BMW Group Classic records production from April 1995 to May 2004, with almost 1.5 million cars produced. That broad date range is useful, but it does not mean every E39 body or derivative was built for all nine years.

The E39 evolved substantially during its life. The Saloon arrived first, the Touring followed later, diesel technology moved on sharply in the late 1990s, the M5 introduced a 400 hp V8, and an autumn-2000 model revision brought both visible changes and important petrol-engine replacements. Understanding those stages is more useful than treating every E39 as one fixed specification.

BMW E39 years: 1995-2003 or 1995-2004?

For the complete E39 generation, 1995-2004 is the most precise simple answer. BMW Group Classic gives the series production span as 04/1995 - 05/2004.

The confusion comes from using a rounded generation label as though it were the production date of every body style. BMW Group Classic gives the E39 Saloon a narrower 04/1995 - 11/2003 production span, while some Touring derivatives ran into 2004. The 540i Touring, for example, is recorded from March 1997 to May 2004.

So both of these statements can be true:

  • the E39 era is often summarised as 1995-2003;
  • the complete E39 series continued into 2004.

If a build month matters for parts, originality or specification, use the exact body and derivative rather than a rounded generation date.

E39 Saloon and Touring dates

The E39 launched as a four-door Saloon. BMW Group Classic dates that body from April 1995 to November 2003. Its styling was primarily the responsibility of Joji Nagashima, with the familiar paired round lamps placed behind common outer covers.

The Touring arrived later. BMW's archive gives the 540i Touring from March 1997, nearly two years after the 540i Saloon, and other Touring derivatives likewise have their own production windows. That later estate-car chronology is one reason the complete E39 series extends beyond the Saloon's end date.

The Touring also differs mechanically in an important way. BMW Group Classic says Touring rear axles used air suspension with level control. That makes rear air springs, level-control behaviour and estate-specific tailgate equipment genuine additional inspection points on a Touring rather than generic E39 issues.

These are representative archive records, not a complete derivative list. They are useful precisely because they show why one date pair or one specification cannot safely describe every E39.

What made the E39 different?

BMW's engineering emphasis for the fourth-generation 5 Series was not just more power. BMW Group Classic highlights substantial use of aluminium in the chassis, helping combine comfort, weight control and the handling character for which the E39 became known.

The engine range was unusually broad. Depending on market and date, the E39 included a four-cylinder diesel, petrol and diesel six-cylinders, V8 petrol models and the separate M5. That breadth is important when buying one today: advice that is correct for an M54 six-cylinder may be irrelevant to an early M52 car, a diesel or a V8.

BMW's own archive also makes the Touring distinction explicit through its rear air suspension and level control. The practical lesson is simple: first identify the body, build period and exact engine, then apply model-specific technical advice.

What changed on the E39 in 1998?

There was no single day in 1998 when every E39 changed, but several important derivatives appeared or evolved around that period.

BMW Group Classic records the 530d Saloon from September 1998. It used common-rail direct injection and a turbocharger with variable turbine geometry. BMW lists 184 hp initially and 193 hp from 2000. That makes the 530d a useful marker for the E39's move into a newer generation of high-output diesel technology.

The E39 M5 also belongs to this period. BMW Group Classic records production from October 1998 and identifies it as the first M Series model to use a V8. Its S62B50 produced 400 hp, with power sent through a six-speed manual gearbox.

The V8 story also changed within ordinary models. BMW's 540i Touring archive says the technically revised M62B44TU appeared from 1998, adding Double VANOS and an electronically controlled throttle. That is a 540i/V8-specific change, not evidence that every 1998 E39 received the same technology.

This is why an advert that says simply “1998 E39” does not tell you enough about its engine hardware.

E39 facelift: what actually changed in 2000?

Owners commonly call the later cars “facelift” E39s. BMW's own archive uses the broader term model revision and provides two useful time markers.

First, the E39 Saloon archive says the distinctive light rings for the position lamps were introduced with the revision for model year 2001. They became one of the easiest visual cues for later cars.

Second, BMW's derivative records show that the revision affected the engine range too. The 525i was launched with the model revision in autumn 2000, using a 2.5-litre inline-six producing 192 hp. The 530i replaced the 528i when the model series was revised in autumn 2000, using a 3.0-litre inline-six producing 231 hp.

So “facelift” should not be reduced to headlamps. It is better understood as a period of linked styling, equipment and powertrain changes. Exact applicability still depends on body, market and build date, so a September-2000 registration is not automatically a complete specification guide.

E39 engines: why year and badge both matter

There is no single E39 engine specification. The badge narrows the answer, but the build date can still matter because engines and control systems evolved during the production run.

A few examples show the range:

  • 530d: BMW records common-rail injection and variable turbine geometry from its September-1998 introduction, with an output increase from 184 hp to 193 hp from 2000.
  • 525i: launched with the autumn-2000 revision, 2,494 cc and 192 hp.
  • 530i: replaced the 528i at the revision, 2,979 cc and 231 hp.
  • 540i: 4.4-litre V8, with BMW separately documenting the factory six-speed manual option on the Saloon; the V8 itself also received a technical revision during the generation.
  • M5: separate S62B50 V8 derivative with 400 hp and six-speed manual transmission.

Those examples are useful for chronology, not as a substitute for the exact derivative page. Engine codes, output, transmission options and service concerns belong with the car they actually describe.

The E39 540i manual

The 540i six-speed manual is a genuine factory configuration, not merely a popular later conversion. BMW Group Classic's 540i Saloon archive explicitly records the combination of the 4.4-litre V8 and six-speed manual gearbox.

BMW gives the 540i Saloon a 4,398 cc V8 and 286 hp / 210 kW. Those are 540i figures, not generation-wide E39 specifications.

TMJC has handled an early example. A surviving Car & Classic syndication connected to The Matt Johnston Collection records M50CDG as a 1996 right-hand-drive 540i, 4.4-litre petrol, factory six-speed manual, in Montreal Blue.

That listing is useful evidence for one real car, but its mileage, colour, options, ownership history, condition and seller opinions do not become facts about every E39. In particular, broad reliability claims in an advert should not override BMW technical evidence or a proper inspection of the individual vehicle.

E39 M5: why it should stay a separate specification

The E39 M5 sits inside the generation but deserves to be treated as its own derivative. BMW Group Classic describes the S62B50 as the first V8 used in an M Series model, with electronically controlled individual throttles, Double VANOS, 400 hp and a six-speed manual gearbox.

Those figures are part of the M5 story, not a useful “top E39 specification” to copy onto ordinary 5 Series cars. The M5 also has its own chassis, braking, maintenance and originality questions. A buyer comparing a 530i, 540i and M5 should therefore use the generation page for chronology and architecture, then move to derivative-specific evidence for mechanical detail.

How many BMW E39s were made?

BMW Group Classic records almost 1.5 million E39s across the series. That makes the generation itself a major-volume model rather than a rare car.

Rarity becomes meaningful only when the claim is narrowed: a particular engine, body, gearbox, market, colour or factory option combination may be much less common. A six-speed 540i can therefore be unusual without turning an unsupported dealer estimate into an official production number.

When a seller gives a very precise rarity claim, ask what production record it comes from and whether the number is global, UK-supplied, body-specific or transmission-specific.

What should you inspect before buying an E39?

At this age, condition, maintenance history and previous repair quality can matter more than a trim badge. A useful inspection should start broad and then become engine-specific.

Corrosion

Classics World highlights wheelarch lips, the fuel-filler area, sills and jacking points as areas worth close inspection. Plastic covers can conceal corrosion, so checking only visible upper panels is not enough. Previous accident repair can also change where and how rust develops.

Cooling system and overheating evidence

Ageing radiators, water pumps, hoses and associated cooling components deserve scrutiny. Overheating history matters because its consequences vary by engine and can be much more serious than the cost of a tired hose or expansion component.

Do not turn “E39 cooling system” into one universal parts list. Confirm the exact engine first.

Suspension and steering

Worn front control-arm bushes, top mounts, dampers and rear suspension components can show up as clunks, vague steering or vibration. A car that feels loose should be diagnosed rather than excused as normal behaviour for an old BMW.

Tourings add the rear self-levelling air system. Check that the car sits correctly, raises and levels normally, and that there is no evidence of leaking or perished air springs.

Electronics and water ingress

Operate the ABS/DSC warning sequence, climate control, windows, central locking, displays, seat functions and other fitted equipment. Instrument-cluster and display faults are common enough to deserve attention, but warning lights should never be dismissed without diagnosis.

Damp carpets or luggage areas need investigation because water ingress can create both trim and electrical problems.

Engine-specific checks

Do not apply one famous E39 problem to every engine. Petrol sixes, diesels, V8s and the M5 have different service histories and failure modes. Before buying, identify the engine code and build period, then use specialist guidance for that exact configuration.

A pre-purchase inspection by someone who knows the relevant E39 drivetrain can be more valuable than a long generic checklist.

How to identify an early or late E39

Visual cues help, but build information is more reliable than registration year.

BMW Group Classic links the light-ring position lamps to the model-year-2001 revision, making them an obvious later-car clue. But mechanical changes do not all line up with one styling feature. The 530d arrived in 1998, the 540i V8 was technically revised from 1998, and the 525i/530i change came with the autumn-2000 model revision.

For parts ordering or originality checks, use the VIN/build date and exact derivative. A registration date can lag production, and two cars registered in the same year can have materially different engine or equipment specifications.

E39, E34 and E60 overlap

Generation changes are phased rather than instantaneous. E39 production began while some E34 derivatives were still being built, and the E60 successor arrived before the complete E39 series had finished.

That overlap is normal. It explains why calendar-year lists can make two generations appear to coexist. Chassis code, body and build date are better identifiers than assuming a model year belongs to only one generation.

TMJC's 1996 540i is a useful example because it sits near the beginning of E39 production and combines right-hand drive, V8 power and the factory six-speed manual.

It also illustrates why provenance and canonical model specification should stay separate. A dealer record can document what was represented about an individual car. BMW's archive establishes what the derivative was as a model. A generation reference should only generalise claims that genuinely apply at generation scope.
