Honda Integra Type R DC2: UK vs JDM explained

Honda’s own dates and specifications show how UK/European DC2 Type Rs differ from early JDM cars and the later Japanese 98 Spec.R.

A UK-market Honda Integra Type R and a Japanese-market DC2 Type R are close relatives, but they are not the same specification. More importantly, JDM and 98 Spec are not interchangeable terms.

Honda launched the Integra Type R in Japan in 1995. It then made a substantial set of Japanese-market changes in January 1998 and explicitly called the revised car 98 Spec.R. Europe received its first official Type R in 1998 as well, but Honda published a separate European power specification and the export car retained its own market-specific equipment.

That chronology is the simplest way through a subject that becomes surprisingly muddled in adverts and forum shorthand.

The first mistake: treating every 1998-on DC2 as a “98 Spec”

98 Spec.R is Honda's name for a particular update to the Japanese-market Integra Type R.

The Type R itself was already more than two years old by then. Honda announced the original Japanese car on 24 August 1995 and put it on sale from 16 October. For the three-door DC2, Honda quoted a 1,797 cc B18C engine producing 200 PS at 8,000 rpm, with 18.5 kgm of torque at 7,500 rpm, a five-speed manual gearbox and 195/55R15 tyres.

Then, on 29 January 1998, Honda announced the revised Japanese Integra. The company used the name B18C “98 Spec.R” and listed a surprisingly broad package of changes rather than a cosmetic facelift:

  • an equal-length stainless-steel 4-in-1 exhaust manifold;
  • revised final gearing;
  • larger disc brakes front and rear;
  • 215/45ZR16 tyres on new five-hole 16-inch wheels;
  • completely retuned suspension;
  • four additional body-strengthening measures;
  • thicker rear lower-arm performance rods;
  • a MOMO steering wheel compatible with the SRS airbag;
  • HID headlights;
  • and a dedicated Integra Type R 98spec.R cockpit badge.

So 98 Spec.R describes a defined Japanese engineering update. It does not mean “any Integra Type R built or registered in 1998”.

Where does the UK Integra Type R fit?

Honda UK says the DC2 Integra was the first Type R officially sold in Britain, arriving in 1998. A contemporary Honda Europe specification published for the 2000 Geneva Motor Show gives the European car a 1,797 cc DOHC VTEC four-cylinder rated at 140 kW / 190 PS at 7,900 rpm and 178 Nm at 7,300 rpm. Honda's later Type R heritage material presents the same European headline output at 8,000 rpm, so the small rpm difference is best treated as source-specific presentation rather than averaged into a new figure.

European regulatory evidence makes the engine identity more specific. Swiss type approval 1HA148, based on Federal Roads Office (ASTRA) vehicle-approval data, identifies the DC2 Type-R engine as Honda B18C6, 1,797 cc. Its 140 kW at 7,900 rpm and 178 Nm at 7,300 rpm figures agree with Honda Europe's contemporary technical listing. That is strong evidence for the B18C6 code, but it is not a substitute for a UK sales brochure when judging UK-only equipment or options.

That alone establishes an important distinction. Honda's 1995 Japanese Type R was quoted at 200 PS; the official European car was quoted at 190 PS. In British magazines and adverts, that European figure is commonly written as roughly 187 bhp, which is why apparently different numbers can describe the same nominal output once PS and bhp are mixed.

The lower European headline output did not mean Honda abandoned the Type R engineering brief. In its later Type R history, Honda specifically describes the European DC2 as retaining the weight-saving focus and even notes thinner windscreen glass for European versions. That is useful context: the UK/European car was a genuine market-specific Type R, not simply a softened imitation of the Japanese car. It is not, however, a standalone identification test — market identity still needs to come from the car's documentation and build evidence.

The safe comparison is therefore:

The table is deliberately market-labelled. There is little value in declaring one number “the DC2 figure” when Honda itself sold different specifications.

Is the UK car basically a JDM 98 Spec underneath?

It shares some of the later hardware, but treating it as an identical JDM 98 Spec.R causes problems.

Strong specialist DC2 references describe UK/European cars as using the later five-stud hub and larger-brake arrangement, while retaining 15-inch wheels with 195/55 tyres. Honda's Japanese 98 Spec.R announcement, by contrast, explicitly specifies five-hole 16-inch wheels with 215/45ZR16 tyres.

That is a useful illustration of the whole issue: the UK car is not simply the early JDM car, but neither is it a carbon copy of the Japanese 98 Spec.R.

The same caution applies to exhaust, gearing and engine-management details. The 1998 Japanese Honda release is very specific about the new stainless 4-in-1 manifold and final-drive revision. Those claims belong to the Japanese 98 Spec.R unless European documentation independently establishes the same part or calibration.

The front end is a useful clue — not proof

The fastest visual distinction is usually the nose. UK and other export-market DC2 Type Rs are associated with the quad round-headlamp front, while the Japanese-market Type R uses the Japanese facelift nose.

That makes photographs useful when screening a car, but not authoritative. DC2s have spent decades being modified, imported, repaired and converted. Front clips, bumpers, wheels, Recaros, steering wheels, exhausts and engines can all be changed.

A quad-headlamp shell should therefore prompt “is this an original UK/European car?” rather than answer it automatically.

The same applies in reverse. A UK-registered car wearing the Japanese front end may be a genuine import, a converted European shell or a repaired car using different panels. You need the identity evidence behind the bodywork.

“JDM” also does not tell you whether a car is 96 Spec or 98 Spec

A Japanese-market DC2 deserves one more step of identification.

Honda's own chronology gives you the dividing line: the Type R existed from 1995, while the major 98 Spec.R update arrived in January 1998. The later Japanese car is identifiable by a combination of the changes Honda documented, particularly its five-hole 16-inch wheel package, larger brakes, revised exhaust/final drive, retuned suspension, additional body strengthening, HID lighting and 98spec.R interior badge.

A 1996 or 1997 JDM Type R can be every bit as genuine a Type R; it is simply the earlier specification. Calling it a “98 Spec” because it was imported or registered in Britain years later rewrites the car's build specification around its UK paperwork.

Registration date and factory specification are not the same thing.

What should you check on a car you are buying?

Work from evidence that is difficult to change towards evidence that is easy to change.

1. Establish the car's original market

Start with the chassis/VIN documentation, registration/import history and any original handbook or sales material. A UK V5C tells you useful things about its UK life, but an imported Japanese car can obviously acquire UK registration later. 2. Establish when the car was built, not merely registered

This matters particularly when somebody advertises a car as 96 Spec, 98 Spec or 00 Spec. Those are specification claims about a Japanese-market car, not British registration-year labels.

3. Check engine and transmission identifiers

A specialist can compare the stamped identifiers with the claimed market and build specification. Engine swaps are common enough on performance Hondas that a red cam cover should never be treated as proof.

4. Use the wheels, hubs and brakes as supporting evidence

An original Japanese 98 Spec.R should make sense against Honda's 16-inch five-hole wheel and larger-brake specification. A UK car on the familiar 15-inch package can also be correct. Aftermarket wheels and brake conversions are common, so this evidence becomes much stronger when supported by old photographs, invoices or original parts retained with the car.

5. Check the front end and lighting, then ask whether it has ever been converted

The quad-headlamp export nose and Japanese-market front are obvious clues. Inspect panel fit, paint history, parts dates and repair records rather than assuming the face currently on the car is necessarily the one Honda built it with.

6. Verify the expensive Type R-specific parts separately

Recaro seats, steering wheels, wheels, exhausts and trim are desirable enough to be removed, replaced or replicated. A car can remain a genuine Type R while no longer being factory-correct; authenticity of the shell and originality of its present parts are different questions.

Which one is the “real” Type R?

Both are.

Honda itself introduced the Japanese Integra Type R in 1995 and later describes the 1998 Integra as the first Type R introduced in Europe. The European car's lower quoted output does not make it an unofficial or imitation Type R; it means Honda engineered and homologated a different market specification.

Likewise, the earlier Japanese car does not become obsolete because the 98 Spec.R gained larger brakes, revised gearing and 16-inch wheels. Those changes make the later car different, not retrospectively more authentic.

For a collector or buyer, the better question is: which specification is this particular car supposed to be, and does the evidence support it?

Why TMJC's 1999 Integra is a useful reminder

The Matt Johnston Collection previously handled a 1999 Honda Integra Type R. The old indexed listing now preserves little more than the identity of the car; it does not expose enough surviving specification detail to establish confidently whether that individual example was UK-market or Japanese-market.

That missing detail is actually instructive. 1999 Honda Integra Type R sounds precise until you ask the questions that matter: original market, build specification, engine identity, front-end configuration and whether it has been altered during nearly three decades of use.

A year and a Type R badge are the beginning of the identification process, not the end.

What still needs checking before calling a UK car factory-correct

A readable original UK sales brochure would be the strongest source for exact UK standard-equipment and option details. A 1998 Great Britain brochure is catalogued in literature archives, but without a readable full copy its contents should not be used to settle UK-only equipment or options. European regulatory type-approval data identifies the DC2 Type-R as B18C6, while UK allocation and equipment questions remain unresolved without period UK material.

Where the evidence becomes market- or equipment-sensitive, the car's original documents should take precedence over a generic internet specification table.
